  • When working on fine pieces such as this project and other special applications I will using a sanding process to bring down my material to the final thickness, assuring no machining defects. I give Walnut special attention to assure a good finish. So great care is taken when handling it. Running Through a Finish Sander for final pass.

Aug 06 2012

  • This process is call cut first. Many times when using an high value wood I will cut the rough length first. This allows for minumal waste of the material when ripping the edge.

these parts are usually cut aprox. 3/8 to 1/2 in over as it has another sizing step involved you will see in the next few up dates. Precutting the parts to rough length

Aug 06 2012

  • These next two steps are important as it maintains the width from end to end. When using the Cut first process, I then edge joint the parts then rip them to width on the table saw and then edge joint the final edge to the width I want.
these parts are now ready to go to the equalizing stage.
Again working with Walnut extra steps are taken to avoid defects. Jointing edge before final sizing

  • Here I am Mitering the parts for the lid of the box.
When cutting and mitering parts for special boxes I like to do the miters on the table saw with a special jig as well as a very good quality blade. I use this blade exclusively for mitered cuts on the table saw.
This jig allows me to hold the pieces and have them clamped as well.

  • Here are the parts for Steves box awaiting finish sanding on the inside. That is the only time you can sand the complete inside of a box before assembly.
These parts are all sized and ready to go to the next step. Parts sized and separated

Aug 07 2012

  • I have a special oscillating drum sander just for running small parts that works real good for giving me the finish I need on the inside of all my parts.
Once I have run them through here they are perfectly flat and I will sand very lightly with a Random Orbital sander after this step. Finish sanding the insides of all the parts before assembly.

Aug 07 2012

  • Prior to actually putting Steve's box together I dry fit and adjust any lengths of parts at this time so as to assure a good solid fit and good mitered corners.
Because of the design we are after for this particular box, we are constructing the sides from 3/4 thick material to allow for some additional detail yet to come. Dry Fitting the Parts

  • The Cover for Steves box is now taking shape.
I have removed all clamps and cleaned up the sides with the hand sander and top by running it through the oscillating drum sander again allowing for a perfectly flat lid.
This is to prepare it for the next step in the process.
The bottom will be the next assembly operation. We are awaiting the hardware to arrive to do some special steps to allow for a good fit in that process as well. another angle of the top awaiting the inlay work

  • Pictured below is a drawing I created from Steves picture he provided. This drawing will be attached to the top of the box and act as a template for me to follow as I route in the words for the inlay. We had to enlarge the actual picture to fill the space on the cover. I will touch up and check the accuracy of the drawing before actually doing the routing. Drawing stretched out to fit Box Lid

Aug 11 2012

  • Here I lay the template on the piece that I am going to routed out. This is done free hand so I really need to have everything straight and accurate.
The Template must be held firmly in place as well as be removable when I am done. Applyed the template to the cover!

Aug 11 2012

  • All the very careful preperation has paid off. The template is staying in place an allowing the router to move freely along the lettering.
This is Script writing so I must have very good control on the Router. Routing out the Script

Aug 11 2012

  • When I am done and can look at it and be satisfied I know my customer will be happy. The extra time preparing for different stages of the project is very critical
I want Steve to be proud to present this to his Bride.
Sand up a bit blow the dust off and we will be ready for inlay work. The Final Routing of the Script is done.

  • Sorry my photographer was absent at the time of these pictures.
Here the mortises are completed but before these where done some very careful measurements where taken as well as the center needs to be dead on to allow for the lock to line up properly. This process is done in multiply steps and needs to be done in sequence.
First I must drill the key hole then do the shallow strick plate mortise then the deep mortise to follow. Cleaning out the hole to test fit the hardware is last. Mortises for both the lid and the bottom

  • One of my favorite things I like to do to dress up a box and add strength to the mitered joint is to add decorative splines to the corners. I usually use a color the opposite of the actual box. This creates an awesome contrasting look.

  • Wow after all those steps its finally starting to take shape.
Some final sanding and finish will set this box off nice.
We are ready for the final count down.
I will look over everything once more make sure everything aligns and all the sharp edges are softened and it will go to the finish room.
As you can see there are a lot of detail goes into a box like this and really becomes a labor of love. Still another view

  • Well Steve we are on the final steps to your creation.
Here you will see that I am spraying on a vinyl sealer as well as two additional top coats to get the sheen desired on a box like this. I use commercial grade finishes as well as a state of the art spraying facility that exchanges the air and filters any particulates.
During the process it is sanded between every coat to assure proper adhesion. Putting on the final coat

I then can be assured that the finish is seasoned enough to put the hardware on.
Here I am putting all the hardware that I carefully marked measured and installed prior to finishing. Now its on for good. This box will be an Heirloom for Steve and his Family. Applying Hardware

  • Hi Steve,

After packaging the bottom of the box with packaging peanuts and wrapping the box in styro wrap, I packed crumple paper around the out side, a couple air bags and more crumple paper on top to keep it centered in the box for transportation. I would rather over package then under package.
Here it comes the moment we all have been waiting for!Shipping day.Just to assure you get it by Saturday of this week which will be several days ahead of schedule I brought it to the post office today.

We used Click and Ship with the United States Postal Service and ship Priority mail which is 2 to 3 days. This not only allows for a timely arrival date but also helps keep the cost down. The other benifit is that it travels on Saturday. The Final step in the process packaging and Shipping.

  • bathroom vanity

    by patty m. Mar 22nd 2013

The vanity Tim made for me is of exceptional, A+ quality, it is a gorgeous Shaker styled piece. Working with Tim was amazing, he is incredibly detail orientated and communicated with me via Custom Made email often and well in order to tailor make the piece to my wishes. I love the way he ends his emails, "In your service"--it is refreshing to see this selfless attitude, this desire to please. I would definitely recommend Tim Ziegler to anyone looking for an expert woodworker to make their special project!

  • Custom Cutting Board

    by Shaunna R. Feb 28th 2013

Mr. Ziegler was amazing with working with me on my custom cutting board. The board turned out better than I could have hoped for. I loved having the creation story about the process. I wanted to put my family into my board because they are the reason I love to cook. It's so pretty I was scared to use it at first. But, I bought it to use it so now I use it everyday! I would highly reccomend Mr. Ziegler. I'm thankful Mr. Ziegler turned my idea into something I couldn't have done on my own.

  • Woodworking

    by Colette Feb 23rd 2013

My project was to create a cutting board to go over a large griddle on my Wolf oven which was lost space when the griddle was not in use. It was a pleasure from A to Z working with Ziegler Woodworking. Tim was great; he immediately understood what I wanted from a small sketch. The board was made to the exact specifications and no alterations were needed. Wonderful work. Thank you Tim!!
