This piece was commissioned in honor of the birthday of the customer's girlfriend. They had spent a memorable week in the island of Kauai and during their stay he had gathered some beach glass.
The conversation started with the beach glass that he wanted incorporated into the art piece. He wanted it to have a connection to their time on Kauai, but beyond that he didn't know. In browsing through some books, I came across this description of Kauai: Aina Kihapai Poina Ole - A Gardenland One Never Forgets.
This seemed such an appropriate starting point. The Passion flower incorporated the recipient's favorite color purple and gave form to my ideas. The beach glass was used as accent glass as though dew drops were dripping from the blossom.
The fused piece was mounted in a wooden base and the title of the piece carved into the frame.
