These andirons and matching grate were designed to be both functional and decorative. The curved lines of the grate, while being aesthetically pleasing, also allow for differential expansion of the steel without deforming the whole piece. The bars forming the bottom of the grate were fit into slots in the main frame allowing for easy replacement when eventually required. I photographed this piece prior to installation because I also made a fire screen with a permanent 'fender' at the bottom and a three panel top. The center panel of the screen was hinged to allow wood to be added to the fire without the necessity of moving a five foot wide fire place screen.
Also shown is a nice set of fire tools.
