The Bubinga and Wenge Gun Safe Cabinet by Corlis Woodworks

What comes to mind when you imagine a gun safe cabinet with a live edge design? A rustic style piece? Something with contours that evokes the outdoors?   When Michael Corlis of Corlis Woodworks was asked to design a custom gun cabinet by his client, he created an article of fine furniture that challenges conventional expectations for both gun safe cabinets and live edge design.

For this beautiful bubinga and wenge gun cabinet, Michael utilized every bit of the bubinga slabs cut for this project, including the sapwood, the growing “face” of the living tree, which is sometimes discarded.  The light sapwood and the bubinga’s black spalting made a striking contrast and complement to the dark wenge wood.

The clean, straight wenge wood frames on both the cabinet doors and side panels enclose the organic, sinuous live edges of the bubinga.   Likewise, the cabinet securely encloses guns and ammunition within, but pullout display racks allow the collection to be showcased.
