Old Ways Ltd.
is a small design studio endeavoring to call back the spirit of the venerable craft traditions of Britain, Japan and Northern Europe, re-interpreting them usefully and meaningfully for the contemporary living space.
Our current collection draws inspiration from the
Arts & Crafts Movement, particularly the “craftsman” or “mission” designwork of Stickley, Limbert, the Roycroft Community and others. It is our hope to give new expression to these influences, while paying close attention that the result be:
- fresh and original
- conceived and assembled at a high level of quality
- functional, that is, of practical use in the home or office
- simple, compact and space-saving
- aesthetically pleasing
Our work characteristically emphasizes graceful proportions, exposed joinery, enhanced wood figure and tactile aesthetics through softened edges and laborious hand-finishing. Taking into consideration the mobility and space constraints of the contemporary lifestyle, we are concerned to address issues of collapsability, portability, disassemblability, flexible use and parts economy.
Our first offering, the Ex Libris Collection, features several designs relating to books, book arts, reading and the home library. Our two new bent-wood pieces represent our first venture into contemporary furniture design. All of our product offering was designed by Ian Hunter, is original to Old Ways Ltd. and was built in the state of Minnesota.
