Bridger Glass Studios
presents Kilnformed Glass Art by Susan Temple. Designs include glass wall sculpture and tabletop pieces. Susan has been working as a professional glass artist for 8 years.
The artist's statement:
Frequently minimalist, my kilnformed glass art alternately explores movement, asymmetry and contrast.
Glass is a three dimensional fluid with a beautiful capacity for representing depth and flow. Cascading flow across a bowl or plate is reminiscent of running streams. I have also abstracted boulder flows, ice floes and river bottoms as well as creating realistic contoured 3D glass art depictions of arctic waters.
Most of my fused glass work starts with creating an original mold using a variety of materials which is typically used in a later kiln firing stage to give shape and texture to the final piece. I hand cut sheets of opaque or translucent glass which I may combine with crushed glass which is then melted or fused in a kiln. Multiple firings may be required to create the final desired effects. My husband Michael Toelle collaborates with me on original steel framing. All our steel frames are an original design and each is hand forged, welded, textured, and finished.
In my abstract work, I love to bring out contrast in glass, so much of my work celebrates contrasts in sheen, color, or texture. Asymmetry is also a hallmark of much of my abstract work - for example, nearly 100 of my pieces have explored variations of asymmetric quadrangle shapes.
