Her work possesses a raw, textural quality, with the clay encompassed in a translucent, earthy glaze. The birds, insects, fish, and flowers present in her work suggest a primordial narrative, while the underlying decorative grids and motifs capture the relentless energy, complexity, and contradictions that pulse through our contemporary society.

Kersey earned a MFA in ceramics from Washington State University in 1997 and a BFA in drawing from Texas Tech University in 1994. She has lived and maintained a studio in San Antonio, Texas since 1998.

    Diana "Living A Potter's Dream"
Texas-born potter Diana Kersey was commissioned to create tiles on guardrails for 2 rebuilt bridges leading into historic Brackenridge Park. One—on Mulberry Street—is done and open for traffic. The second—Mill Race Bridge—is still being erected in July 2011. You can see that process unfolding on this Trailer. I'm going to re-cut all of this footage and much more for the full-length documentary.

Mill Race Bridge—the iconic little golfer-man that graces the 1916-era weathervane on the clubhouse of "The History of Brackenridge Park Golf Course"

The feature-length documentary is about the whole business, as Diana explains how, literally, all her pieces fit together: from pulling 25-lb chunks of raw clay out of a plastic bag to sticking fired and glazed jigsaw tiles into bridge cement.

Diana was the "Artist of the Month" of June 2011 on SA Arts Guide to Culture and Arts in San Antonio. See her bio and art pix there, including the now complete Mulberry Bridge Toad part of her commission.

    Diana "Living A Potter's Dream"
Texas-born potter Diana Kersey received a major commission this year. She's making original tile art for guardrails on 2 bridges as part of San Antonio's Catalpa-Pershing Bridge Reconstruction project. Diana needs to quickly create and install 400+ sf worth of handbuilt, glazed and fired tiles while bridge construction occurs. The San Antonio River flows under these bridges, on its way downtown to the famous River Walk.

Filmmaker James Sanders is documenting Kersey's art, including the process of creating tile panels that will beautify historic Brackenridge Park for a century to come. See our blog http://diana-living-a-potters-dream.tumblr.com/ for details.

Diana's first-installed design—"Life-cycle of the Gulf Coast Toad" on the now-completed Mulberry Bridge—is inspired by the San Antonio River watercourse. She uses bas-reliefs of colorful toads to alert kids to everyday wildlife in our shared environment.

This Trailer, shot in April & May 2011, shows Diana meeting with city planners and construction workers to integrate her installation into their build. She explains how, literally, all the pieces fit together: from pulling raw clay out of its plastic bags to adhering fired and glazed jigsaw tiles into preformed spaces in guardrails. She displays intense focus, artmaking skill, and disarming, infectious humor as she fashions public art into 21st century civic pride.

James captures Diana's deep roots in a primordial tradition of humans consciously using clay as meditative personal expression to connect with history, spirit, and earth's ecology.
