Green Lantern And Blue Lantern Rings a Creation Story by Earth Art Gem & Jewelry

Creating the design

update posted on Feb 22nd 2012 by Earth Art Gem & Jewelry

This project began as a sketch. A simple enough idea: Create a set of matching rings, one with the Green Lantern Logo, and the other with the Blue Lantern Logo. I had to order some extra thick sheet for this project, the photograph shows the humble beginnings of these rings, a sheet of solid sterling silver, which will soon be forged into two rings.

Measuring and cutting

Two rings from one piece of silver. I carefully measure and then etch a line where the silver needs to be divided to create a 20mm band and a 10mm band, giving myself a little extra to work with.

I use a bench shear to cut the silver getting a nice straight cut. Afterwards, I clean and then apply a brushed finish to the silver. The matte finish will allow me to draw on the sheet.

Using a circle template, I hand draw out each design on the silver.

Making the First Ring

update posted on Feb 22nd 2012 by Earth Art Gem & Jewelry

The Green Lantern ring was first.

This project has many steps.

Follow along with the pictures to see the process come alive.

First, we bend the silver sheet into a ring shape. Next the ring is soldered shut using silver solder. The ring is then cleaned in a mild acid bath. This cleaning is performed after each soldering step.

I the start cutting out the design from the outer ring before it is bent into a ring. Each component of the design is hand detailed and de-burred. I set these aside for later.

Then I made an outer ring in the same manner. This ring called for a design to be etched into the outside of a large ring. Rather than etching (Which is difficult and often prone to error) and rather than stamping (Which would have been too shallow) I am going to use two bands, attached to each other to create the design with will then be extra deep and will last a long long time.

After attached the inner band to the outer band, I take the parts of the symbol, and very carefully solder them in place inside the circle in the outer band. This creates a very deep (about 1mm) etching effect.

The ring is then cleaned and the oxidized to turn everything black. After oxidizing, I polish the entire ring which removes the black coating from everything except the recessed design. I then wash the ring and buff it again to get that extra shine.

Tomorrow I'll repeat these steps to create the Blue Lantern ring and post a set of final pictures of the two finished rings.
