At the workbench
when steel meets wood, just as when the lights dim, the room quiets, and the music starts, it is all about Resonance, Clarity, and Harmony.
Concert Classical and Flamenco guitars are built with traditional materials and techniques at the studio of Michael L. Elwell in the woods of North Idaho. Customizing for individuals, he has incorporated contemporary innovations like acoustic ports and beveled arm rests. Michael finds each person he builds for draws forth a unique guitar, starting with the materials selection and the rosette, which is when the instrument begins to acquire it's character. Artificing with precision and attention to detail he manifests guitars which are sophisticated tools.
Michael Elwell has trained at Leeds Guitar making School and American School of Lutherie. He has worked as a mill-man and a cabinet maker. His toolmaking experience includes model making, mold making, and foundry pattern making.
