As a youngs … Read more I am a textile and print artist working in marbling, monoprinting, silk painting and complex cloth. My work includes fashion accessories especially hand painted scarves, home accessories including throw pillows and fine art.

I have been working in fabric and fiber for over 50 years in one way or another. As a youngster I sewed almost all the clothes I wore and became interested in knitting, embroidery and other decorative needle arts.

I began weaving in 1976 while working on my Masters of Fine Arts at Boston University. My weaving developed from utilitarian pieces to artwork including warp painting. In 2008 I tore my rotator cuff and had surgery. I have recovered almost all my mobility but the strength and stamina of my right arm is limited. I finally had to concede that my weaving days are over. But not my creative days!

Marbling

I began marbling occasionally in 2000 but had the opportunity to study with Elin Noble in 2007. This experience set me off in quest of color on paper as well as textiles. Since my shoulder injury had interrupted my weaving, I took the opportunity to explore and experiment in this technique. I enjoy working with paper and exploring the possibility of controlling the marbling colors to a certain degree to produce representative pieces. As with the dye work in my weaving, it is the combination of controlling the process and responding to the surprises in the process that I enjoy.

My marbling has expanded and progressed rapidly and I am happily employed in marbling silk scarves, men's ties, wooden boxes, paper to cover books, art pieces and basically anything that isn't nailed down.

Silk Painting and Monoprinting on Paper and Silk

A natural development from my experiments in marbling, which is a kind of monoprint, was to do direct application of color on silk and also monoprinting with dyes. This has been a very fertile and enjoyable foray which I plan to develop further. The layering and interplay of techniques has caught my interest.

Recognition and Galleries

I have received recognition from the Boston Weavers' Guild and the New England Weavers' Seminar. My work has appeared in 'Nantucket Island Living', Winter 2009, Nantucket Independent, Sept. 3, 2008,'Cape Cod Life' Arts Guide, Spring2008', 'Handwoven Magazine' and 'The Weavers' Journal'. My pieces have been shown at the Artists Association of Nantucket, Arts Council of Nantucket, Nantucket Looms on Nantucket and the Old Town Artisans Gallery and The Pink Adobe Gallery in Tucson, Arizona and The Artisans' Tree in Scituate, Massachusetts. I am a member the Nantucket Artists Association, Nantucket Arts Council and the Surface Design Association of America.

Currently my pieces can be seen at the Artist Association of Nantucket, Nantucket Looms as well as at artisans' fairs throughout the year. In addition, my studio/gallery (and apartment) is open by appointment.
