In 1974 The
Old Fashioned Milk Paint Company revived an ancient, homemade formula for genuine, organic milk paint, which was a typical Colonial and Shaker finish. Milk paint is one of the earliest paints known. Milk paint was found in early cave paintings in France and even on objects found in King Tut's tomb.
Packaged in powdered form in order not to use chemical preservatives, it is easily mixed with water before application. Milk paint is widely used by people with multiple chemical sensitivity as it has virtually no odor and is fast drying. It is all natural, contains zero VOC's and is 100% biodegradable.
It is available in twenty deep, rich colors that may be blended to create a wealth of other custom paint colors. The colors are steadfast and will not fade, and have a velvety appearance. It has a presence rarely found in modern, chemically based paint.
The original Old Fashioned formula is best used on porous surfaces such as bare wood. It has a mottled, uneven, "old world" look which lends itself well for restoring old furniture or interiors, or for reproduction work.
A second formula has recently been introduced, called SafePaint for walls. SafePaint can be used on previously painted surfaces, new drywall with joint compound, or any other nonporous (interior) surface, including metal. It comes in the same deep, rich colors but is more uniform in appearance.
Both formulas are flat. A sheen can be achieved by applying any clear top coat over the painted surface, including vanishes, oils and waxes.
