Hi Rhonda Just wanted to give you a peak into what I do. This will be the 1st of 3 installments

First, I use my CAD software to import your image and begin the creation of your piece in the virtual world.

Next I finish 3D detailing arrange the stone and prepare it for rendering by adding a chain etc.

Show me a Picture!

update posted on Jan 25th 2012 by Paul Michael Design

I use another type of software to take the 3D geometry and create a photo of your piece, Now you can see what it will look like before you have to say "I'll Take It!"

Create the 3d STL

update posted on Jan 25th 2012 by Paul Michael Design

Next step, I prepare the file for manufacturing. I create a special file called an STL or Stereolithography file. (sort of like a PDF in 3d- Its universal)

What the heck is G-Code?

update posted on Jan 25th 2012 by Paul Michael Design

after I create the STL I will then begin to engineer the tooling and paths for the piece to be cut out of a block of wax. Check out how many tool paths there are- This piece has 235,650 lines of G-Code.

Off to see Millie!

update posted on Jan 25th 2012 by Paul Michael Design

here is a quick pic of your piece loaded into a virtual 3D world so I can begin cutting it from the block of wax. Check in later we will be cutting and finishing the wax, encasing it in plaster, pouring molten gold in and finishing her up. It will be a great tour.

We Got Wax!

update posted on Jan 27th 2012 by Paul Michael Design

Well after a few hours on Millie we have a wax. I now take this and encase it in plaster and burn the wax out of the plaster. when the wax is gone and the plaster is at the right temperature we pour the molten gold into the void in the plaster.
