Experience the luxurious
feel and beautiful colors of silk. Warren Hartz, the artist, hand dyes silk to create unique pieces of decorative and wearable art.
We have dyed scarves, ties and hair scrunchies for two choirs and several weddings, as well as dyeing custom tank tops, Hawaiian shirts, scarves, pillows and wall hangings for individuals.
The silk is hand painted with dyes which become part of the fabric, leaving it soft and silky with a sheen that sparkles in the light. Resists and dyes are applied to silk with brushes, fine line applicators, sponges and leaves. Wet dyes are sometimes sprinkled with salt, creating a pattern as the dyes dry. Steaming and rinsing sets the dyes and brings out the vibrant colors and wonderful softness of the silk.
Silk from the Hartz is a family business in the beautiful Cascade Mountains of Washington State. Warren has been an artist all his life, working in wood, paint, candles, photography and music. In 2000, he started dying silk while organizing art projects for youth. He began studying books on dying silk, and by experimenting with various resists, dyes, and techniques came up with some totally new designs.
