Chess And Wine

Aargh! The queen is on the wrong color tile in the photo.

The client wanted a chess table with drawers similar to another I'd done years ago (One Man's Cave Table), but with storage for 4 or 5 bottles of wine and which would fit in a very specific spot in his home. I created a chess table with plenty of textural interest, employing eye catching and unusual joinery to make the transition from the square of the chessboard to the rectangle of the full tabletop. Up to ten bottles of wine can be stored on each end of the table with their necks resting in sound absorbing leather lined holes in the table legs. Black leather also lines the drawer bottoms; and strips of the same keep the chess pieces from rattling as you lift their racks out of the drawers. All joints are cross-doweled and plugged, as are the tongues of the wine racks.
