Custom Design/Build Contemporary Attic Remodeling Project
CustomMade by Dave Mecherly
This award-winning custom design/build remodeling project converted a truss-framed attic over 3-car garage into four additional rooms of contemporary living and storage space.
The new rooms included a 27' long walk-in closet, a reading room off the existing master bedroom, a home office and
… hobby room. Five Velux remote-controlled skylights were installed as were contemporary lighting fixtures.
Entry to the walk-in closet is through an existing bi-fold closet door. Entry to the remaining three rooms is through a new pocket door in the existing master bedroom.
The hobby room features a custom designed floor made of lazer-cut 1/8" commercial grade vinyl. All cabinetry was custom-built.
All building materials entered project site via a temporary opening in the side of the garage attic. Material handling equipment was employed including a 70' conveyor system and stationary crane.
All truss framing was removed and replaced with rafter construction to open the space. Engineered floor support required the installation of 1 3/4" x 14" x 24' laminated joists and perimeter beams. A separate custom-designed furnace was installed within the attic envelop. Insulation was Corbond Spray Foam.
Project was nationally acclaimed with a 2003 Chrysalis Design Award. The happy home owners said the finished project exceeded their greatest expectations and they still are in love with the results to this day.
