Update #1 scale drawings

The following items are not illustrated, but will exist: The three lower drawers will all have filing cabinets in them with a lock. The orientation of the files will be perpendicular to the drawer sides, as we discussed. There would be an adjustable shelf under the desk on the hutch, no doors or drawers there. There would also be an adjustable shelf on both of the cabinets with doors on them. The desk drawer’s face would hinge down to be flush with the drawer bottom. The desk will have a grommet to allow cords an exit point. Drawers would be made with dovetail joinery and use mechanical slides. Doors and drawers would be inset with a 1/8" reveal (standard). Doors would be hinged with European hinges. Carcass construction of all cabinetry and drawer faces will use mortise and tenon construction. Kindly review and approve or correct so that I may begin construction. Feel free to call or write with any questions. The two last pictures illustrate a walnut dowel that goes across the tenon, which locks the joint even after the glue breaks down. While this technique is recommended for solid construction, using oak would be more discreet. It depends on your aesthetic preference.

Update #2 mortise and tenon

Sorry, I had planned on calling you but the evening came faster, with much too much to do. I am sending you an e-mail so that I don’t interrupt you at work, although a phone conversation is fine as well.
The reason furniture makers and cabinet makers use wood working joinery is because of two wood characteristics: long grain and short grain.
Long grain describes the grain structure along the face and along the edges of a piece of wood. It is called long grain because they run from one end of a board to the other. Adhesives can grip around the fibers, creating a very strong joint. Long grain to long grain gluing situations is always preferred. This is maximizing when the wood is glued in a parallel or perpendicular orientation to the long grain.
Short grain, also called end grain, is the end of the wood fibers. Trying to glue or cut the ends of the wood grain can be very difficult, if not impossible. When short grain is part of a joint, the ends of the wood fibers gives glue very little to grip; they suck in the glue like straws. Consequently, this also occurs with the finish; however the big difference is that the finish or stain will penetrate the end grain. Typically, the end grain when stained stains darker than the side grain. Wood working joins that maximize the wood strengths (long grain) and minimizes the woods weakness (short grain) are considered high quality construction. There are three reasons for this, one, the furniture is built to last, two, woodworking joints take a considerably greater amount of time to construct well than say plywood or particle board construction and three solid wood cost more. Below are examples of woodworking joinery that I plan on using with your cabinets. Feel free to call or write with any questions.

Update #5 update

Here are all the dovetailed drawers. I have not made the drawer faces yet or attached the slides but that should be done soon. I will send you more pictures sometime this weekend.
