Custom golf clubs

How important are custom clubs to my golf game?
Should I buy custom clubs?

The answers will depend on your degree of involvement in the game. You should not be buying custom clubs if you are just taking up the sport unless money is of very little importance to you. Renting or borrowing (see etiquette) is a good idea for the first few rounds. A more experienced player will be ready to buy a new set of clubs having acquired a feel for some of the more subtle differences. Until you reach that point I strongly recommend considering used clubs.

If you are ready for your own new set of clubs then a set of custom built clubs makes good sense. Custom clubs are not much more money than mass produced new clubs and they will certainly be better geared to your physical measurements, strength, playing characteristics and goals.

How do I order custom clubs?

Depending on where you choose to order your custom clubs you will have different options on how to select or customize properly for you and your game.

WestCoastGolfOnline has a very user friendly approach. The online form asks for some objective data such as your height, build, age, distance from the tip of your finger to the floor etc. They also ask some subjective questions such as "How would you describe your swing tempo? medium, slow, or fast". This approach to customizing clubs will work very well for most recreational golfers.

GolfClubs.net has a slightly more technical approach. They give you the specs for grip, shaft, length and flex. It's your job to decide what's right for you. This place is great for the more experienced player who wants to make all the decisions. GolfClubs.net even offers the components separately for those with the time and skill to assemble from the ground up.

Golfclubs.com Has some good values including all new starter sets for men, women, and juniors. There isn't much to "customize" about these sets, choose from right or left handed. In heir higher end irons and woods you choose between regular and stiff shafts.

Don't plan on borrowing clubs from someone elses' bag during play. Each player should be carrying their own set of clubs during a round of golf. This not just good etiquette, most places it's in the rules.
