  • Daniel,
We can actually go pretty small on the font before it gets illegible. I can't emboss the letters if they're smaller (which will likely be the case for this font, depending on how it fits with the design you want) but the impressed look is quite nice. I'm attaching a couple of images for you to see samples of this font in leather, both embossed and impressed. This one is a small 4x5 book and the lettering is impress into the leather. It has more of a pyrographic look to it.

This is a 9x6 (same size you're doing) but the design is smaller overall so the lettering could be a bit bigger. We can play with sizing options on your book design and lettering, of course.

Update #2 Mockup 1

Daniel,
Attached is the first mock up. Let me know what you think of the positions, sizes, the width of the stream (do you want it more narrow or is the width fine as is). Colors are as close as I can get them on the computer--the overall tan color will be much more varied, less even, than it shows in the image. The blue can be close to the color I've shown or darker blue. It's kind of choppy looking but I can add more white froth to it, if you prefer.

Update #3 Revised design

Daniel,
Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. It's been kinda crazy this week. I'm attaching a new mock up based on the ideas/alterations you've explained to me. What I can do to make the river seem less detailed is simply emboss the waves/flow of the river rather than carving and tooling it so the tree will be carved and detailed but the river will be more impressed/embossed without the same hard lines.

I wasn't sure what the brown/tan section was that followed the blue rive but I did add something like that in based on your design. The blue river doesn't have to have a lighter outline for it to show up, in case that was your concern. I'll be coloring the river first on the natural leather before staining/dying the rest of the cover brown and finish with the black for the tree and lettering.

Let me know what you think,
Eva

  • Daniel,
I've gotten most of the basics done--text block sewn, boards prepped. I'll be putting the book together tomorrow and doing the cover so I'll add more photos tomorrow. Should be ready to ship on Tuesday but I'll give you an accurate update tomorrow evening.

Also, I broke my camera and haven't had a chance to replace it yet (still doing some research on what to replace it with). Fortunately it still seems to be working ok but I'm noticing some minor flares on some of the photos I've taken recently. Hopefully it will hold out until I can replace so I don't have to resort to my phone camera.

Eva Spine is glued up and unbleached muslin was used for the mull, also to help support the spine over time.

  • All that's left is the leather--gluing it in place, tooling the design, coloring and gluing down the endpapers. I'll send more photos later tonight. Showing both boards in place.

  • Another update--the book is currently in the press. Photos are attached. Everything is pretty much done except for doing the overall Chestnut color on the outside of the cover and then adding the finish. It should dry pretty well overnight so adding the dye tomorrow will dry pretty quickly, as well. I'll send final photos in the morning, once the dye and finish are added. Since I have to wet the leather to glue and shape it on the covers, I do the cover design at the same time because it also requires damp leather. This is the design traced onto the cover.

Update #8 Stream Redo

Daniel,
Ok, attaching a photo of the outer section of the stream lightened up a bit. I didn't want to do straight white because I think it would be too stark but let me know if you like it this way--it's more of a light cream.

Update #9 Final Journal

Ok, here are the finished photos, as promised. The finish doesn't do anything but protect the dyes, colors and leather itself. It can add a soft sheen and, on the river I used a gloss finish so it's a little shinier.

It's been a pleasure working with you!

W. H. Auden Journal

Lady Artisan in Texas being made by Lady Artisan
A CustomMade user submitted:

“Hello! I'm looking to have a medium hardcover leather journal made. I would need it for September 1, which I realize is short notice (I read elsewhere that your typical turnaround is 8 weeks), but I'm wondering if you might still be able to do it. The journal is for my girlfriend, who often writes poetry/song lyrics. I want the journal to be just the color of the leather, with three different elements on the cover: 1. A quote from her favorite poem by W. H. Auden burned in: "The clocks had ceased their chiming,/And the deep river ran on." This is from the poem "As I Walked Out One Evening" 2. A black silhouette of a pine tree, similar to one of the trees in the attached image (she has long thought of getting a pine tree tattoo, and has cited this image as one she likes). 3. A relatively thin, snaking line of sky blue along the bottom, perhaps broken up by the base of the tree. This would be relating to the image of the river in the quote, but more like a stream in
