This table was a lifetime dream of ours. This was also our first project with CustomMade and Alan, and we couldn't be more pleased! The wood he suggested and used was gorgeous, the tooled designed legs perfect, the puzzling surface and and the mechanics of it were incredible, the inlaid chess board just lovely....everything was beautifully thought out and executed. As it was our first piece of really good furniture, we were a wee bit neurotic, Alan was so patient and kind with us and our many changes! He worked closely with us, sending drawings and pics as we progressed through to the final piece. Alan is more than a furniture maker...he is truly an artist. We were so lucky that it was he who we worked with! The piece is everything we could have hoped for. It was shipped beautifully and arrived yesterday, and now sits in it's place of honor. Thank you Alan! We will be more than happy to give recommendations whenever you need them! And if we ever want another custom piece we will, without hesitation, come to you!
This is a rather bold and brassy piece. Literally. I designed and fabricated all the brass features and hardware on this bookcase except the door hinges and catches. These details include a medallion at the base, columns uniting the upper and lower cases, handles on the doors in the lower case, knobs on the map drawer, and finials to top the upper case.
In addition to the brass, this design features veneers of Quarter sawn Anigre, Cherry, Maple, Mahogany, and Oak. The frame is constructed of ebonized Walnut and Poplar with a shellac finish that yields a stunning compliment to the brass, lighter veneers, and inlays.The drawer is for maps and other pamphlets. The drawer has a lid so when you pull it out you can rest reading material on it or lift the lid to retrieve a map.
