Faux Bois Bench
CustomMade by Michael Christie-Fogg
Faux bois originated in France around the turn of the century, and antiques from that era continue to be much sought after by collectors. Very few artists continue to work in this media professionally.
It is created by applying concrete onto a steel framework, and then sculpting it to resemble
… wood. Every aspect of the work is done by hand, and takes many hours to complete. No molds, forms, or other casting methods are used in its creation, just a few simple tools and lots of patience. The wet concrete must be worked before it cures, so often very long hours are required on the part of the artist before the work can be set aside to fully cure.
The resulting piece is extremely durable, and will withstand the elements for centuries. Every piece is completely unique and is not replicable by any other means.
There are many ways to mix and cure concrete, but recent technology has allowed us to make stronger, more flexible, denser and therefore much more durable structures than ever before. Proper curing is essential. The steel framework, or armature, is also critical to ensure the structural integrity of the various shapes.
Remember, this is concrete and steel, not wood!
