What a wonderful artist Michelle is! After meeting with us initially to better understand what we had in mind for the transom window, she prepared several artist drawings with suggested themes. Every one was a possibility that we could have been pleased with. With her talent it made it difficult to decide. We settled on one, then changed to another, and finally after incorporating elements from more than one, and with further changes and additions we finally settled on what has become a work of art in the 6' wide arched transom window above our 8' front doors. It incorporates elements of the family's heritage with a truly wonderful rondel at it's center.
This is a custom fused glass dining table top insert. The customer wanted a piece that made her think of the ocean. To accomplish this look, an ocean palette of colored glass was arranged on a clear iridized blank and then heated to 1700 degrees. When the glass achieved a near molten stage, I opened the kiln (turning it off first!) and raked across the surface to create the organic, ocean-like swirls and eddies. The raked glass was then fired atop a new clear blank to soften the colors and insure uniform thickness and durability. The circle was sized and a final fire polishing was done in the kiln.
The client is having a table top built that will have a circle cut out of the center. The fused glass piece will sit atop a lighting fixture that is in the central pedestal of the table. The end result will be a table with an ocean view!
