This is the story behind the piece. The inspiration for it, what it’s made of and how it was created. It’s just the artisan’s way of showing you the level of care and detail that goes into what they create. And our way of reassuring you that for one-of-a-kind creations, you’ve come to the right place. So get to know the offerings and when you’re ready, contact the artisans directly. And do us a favor, let them know you found them on CustomMade.com

Chest of Drawers (Chest sans Sides), Cherry, Red Oak, Maple, Sycamore, Pecan, Red Cedar; Shellac Polish and Oil/Polyurethane/Beeswax Finishes *** This is actually a piece I made on speculation for sale through a gallery, but it demonstrates one of the possibilities in art furniture available to you. The design of this unusual piece came to me in a flash one day. The piece has no sides! The drawer sides do double duty as the chest sides, highlighting the dovetail joinery when the drawers are open. There are few 90 degree angles in this piece, and the drawers are not simple boxes, yet they slide nicely in their trapezoidal openings. Chest sans Sides was a finalist in the 2008 Niche Awards competition and won a Blue Ribbon and Viewer Choice Award when it debuted at the 46th Annual Art Exhibit of the Rappahannock Art League. The gentleman who purchased this chest immediately commissioned me to design and make a matching sturdy low profile turntable on which the chest would set. He now displays it in his living room and can turn it to see all the sides! *** I enjoy the challenge of designing and building new furniture. The custom design process is a wonderful and fulfilling collaboration between myself and my clients. If possible, I visit the home where the furniture will reside (or, if distance is prohibitive, I review photographs of the new home for the piece), and then I provide a selection of computer drawn 3-dimensional renderings of what the piece might look like so we can all visualize it. This begins the iterative give and take design process, resulting in delivery of just the right piece of furniture! Have you a bent toward art furniture? Perhaps we can work together to design an artistic piece for your home! *** Juried Virginia Professional Artisan: Artisans Center of Virginia, Juried Member: Rappahannock Art League, Member: The Furniture Society
