Maple and Walnut Kitchen Cabinetry
A large center island measuring 8'-6" long x 6'-4" wide serves as both the focal point, and a grand work space in this kitchen. The island was crafted of all solid walnut, with a granite counter top. The side facing the sink cabinets has 9 dovetailed drawers, including two banks of 3 drawers each that are angled towards the cook as one stands in front of the down draft gas stove. The opposite side of the island features an 8'-6" long lowered counter supported by two large walnut legs that serves as a breakfast area. The island was wired with electrical outlets, phone, and cable. The rest of the cabinets were crafted of a combination of walnut and clear white maple wood. Two full height cabinets flank either side of the sub-zero fridge. A frosted glass was used in the real mullion crisscross upper doors. Tim and Virginia spent many years in Asia, and wanted to incorporate details in their kitchen from this part of the world. Architect Chris Broda designed this kitchen to meet their wishes. All the horizontal walnut members of the kitchen are 1/2" proud of the rest of the face surfaces, resulting in a strikingly unique look. There are hand arranged tiles inset in all the upper row of drawers around the entire kitchen, and were also used in portions of the backsplashes. This section of cabinets wrapped around a corner, and featured a wine refrigerator and wine rack.
