Fourteen Chair, I made this chair for a writer friend to use as an office chair. Because she spends many hours at her desk, it had to be as comfortable as aesthetically pleasing. She had no specific requests for the design, so to begin, I took into consideration both her personality and physical build. I’m happiest with my designs when I feel like I’ve captured exactly yet creatively the needs—or essence—of my client, and in this case, I nailed it. The chair, like she, is strong yet refined. It’s lean and straight, yet has no right angles. It has a natural flare from the center, which, with the criss-crossed wenge backrest, is a point of strength. The legs widen in the front and broaden in the back, which suggests stability. Overall, the piece is a wonderful balance of masculine and feminine characteristics, a careful study of complements and contrasts, but unified into a simple, elegant whole.
