Moments
CustomMade by Shawn Turley
As an artist and designer, every design choice has purpose; there is a reason for a piece's shape, flow, pattern, color and so on. This clock's elements are full of symbolism. The spiral represents a life cycle, where the perception of time is abundant when one is younger but aggressively
… fleeting and getting smaller as we get older or realize that our time is limited. As a result of our increased awareness of time's fragility, moments with friends and family take priority. The warm, almost glowing color of mahogany makes it a desirable choice to represent life. It is carved to resemble a raked Zen garden symbolizing a peaceful calm. The spiral is precariously resting on one side emphasizing the instability of life's balance.
The vines that grow up and around the spiral represent the choking and overwhelming feelings that attempting to control time can bring about. The vines continually split like our time line, which breaks down in a very specific manner. Animals rely on the same influences as we do, for example, the sun and the moon; however, their internal clock is approximating, not exact, thus the choice to not have a clock dial. Time constraints and demands can often ruin moments with friends and family. Like vines growing on a brick wall, time can interrupt the natural pattern of special moments. Controlled time smothers the moments that rarely recur. Time keeps moving forward, never backward; how one spends his time can come with great regret, especially if one does not value his activities. Time, like growing vines, can smother us and interrupt the natural pattern of life's moments. Moments are valuable and should not be taken for granted.
My cousin and a colleague died this year from cancer. Both were only a few years older than I and both left behind a wife and several children. This clock, consequently, is dedicated to their lives. While I sacrificed many moments with my family to build this clock, my hope is that this tangible art piece can inspire people to focus more on the moment. The epiphany is that it's not about the time, but the precious moments, which are less predictable, but certainly attainable.

A low chest with three drawers (c. 36"wide, 24"high, 18"deep
by Bridget G Oct 16th 2012
Our experience with Shawn Turley lived up to our expectations in every way. The chest we ordered is beautiful -- the wood-grain is unique to this piece: something we would never have got from a machine-made one, and the dimensions are just what we ordered. Throughout Shawn kept us informed about what we were getting, with pictures for our approval. He answered all e-mails within a few hours, and the delivery occurred on the day he told us it would, within half an hour of what he predicted (though he had to make quite a drive to get to us). Delivery couldn't have been smoother, and there was no assembly required by us (a blessing, as we're not very good at it). Given the meticulous workmanship and quality of materials we thought the price reasonable.

Custom Desks project
by Cliff W. Aug 17th 2012
From start to finish DST (Shawn) has been upfront about the entire project. His expertise in wood is beyond anything I have seen! The time and quality that went into making the bookcases and the hutch desk is stunning, and the price we paid for the entire project was absolutely well worth the investment. I say investment, because we want furniture that lasts, and this is furniture that will last a few lifetimes. I was going to put a "B" on timeliness, because Shawn did exceed our date, but after going over this, I feel that this furniture needed more time then I had allotted for its inception, the wait was more, more, than worth it. Communication through email, phone and in-person was timely. Shawn's professionalism was evident throughout the project, explaining in laymen terms, wood styles, etc. The quality of the work is more then an "A" there should be a slot for "A++" because it is excellent! Shawn delivered the furniture himself with a helper on the hottest day of the yea... Read More

Simple floating shelf
by Martin Skelton Jan 20th 2012
The project was quite a simple floating shelf. Sean and I briefly discussed the dimensions ect and right on time in the mail came a beautiful piece of work of the highest quality. Shawn made a truly lovely thing for a very reasonable price. And he sent not only detailed installment directions, but also all the drill bits and screws that would be needed to install the shelf. He even followed up to make sure I had received it and was happy. I am. Very.
