Designing chairs is always challenging, so I was excited to tackle a rocking chair. Even though it was custom built for the needs of a new mother, everyone who has had the pleasure of sitting in it agrees that it is an exceptionally comfortable chair with a very smooth rocking motion. It is made with traditional joinery so that she will still be rocking away many years from now, surrounded by grandchildren.
Flowing lines are sculpted by hand from solid wood to form the arms, legs, and back rest. The rockers are laminated from many thin strips of walnut glued together on a curved form. The laminated cherry back-splats are flexible, yet provide a great deal of comfortable lumbar support. The seat assembly is made with mechanically locking dovetail joints that get tighter with the pressure of sitting. Traditional wedged mortise and tenon joinery is used elsewhere. A full-scale model was used in the design process to develop everything from the seat angles to the rocker shape. The back splat shape is a result of testing on various people and body shapes.
