Philadelphia Tilt Top Tea Table
CustomMade by Eric Jacobsen
All of the wood used in this table was processed on site at my shop. In this case, the Walnut arrived at the shop in log form and left as a finished tea table. When building fine furniture, the process starts long before you even take an order. From the 35" diameter single board crotch top to … the 4" thick heavy stock used to build the entire base of this table, care must be taken from the day the log is milled. The heavy stock for this table is air dried for at least 3 years. This ensures deep rich color and minimizes degrade, or cracking and warping during the drying process. It is then place in the dry kiln to bring it down gently to the desired 6-8% moisture content. At the other end of the spectrum most commercial lumber yards inject steam into the dry kiln with their walnut charge. This process bleeds the beautiful brown color of the heart wood into the undesirable white color of walnut's sapwood. This result in a very bland grayish color and is only done to increase the yield of their walnut harvest. Commercial furniture manufactures then stain the wood dark to further hide their use of the les desirable sapwood. This table is built as the originals were, with sliding dovetails securing the legs to the column and the raised molding on the tops perimeter is molded from the solid. The table has a birdcage mechanism which allows the top to spin when horizontal and tilt to the vertical for storage. All of the carving and turning was done by hand.
