The original mantel was too small, not to mention unattractive, for the room. The new design was adapted from a mantelpiece book. I changed parts of the mantel to be a better fit with the arts and crafts home where it would be installed. The bookcases are my original design. I kept the new … baseboard flat and square so that I could tie the new cabinetry into the existing trim, making it part of the house rather than an addition to it.
The tile and fireplace insert (not installed) was done by others.
