The owner of a family heirloom dining table with six (6) chairs was desperate: repair the complete set so it can be passed down to waiting children, or it would be discarded. At first glance, it appeared that the dining set was going to have to be discarded. The table was dangerously wobbly, with pieces held together by "spit & a prayer!" The chairs too, defied logic as to how anyone was able to sit in them at the table for a meal, or to work on the table, and not collapse to the floor. Also, the table top had received many unfortunate and ruinous burns, scratches, and other maladies.

After a vote was taken by all concerned, it was agreed that the dining set was worth salvaging and that The Plane Edge would rescue the dining table and chairs. It was determined that the table top would be left alone for later consideration, and that the table and chairs needed to be strenthened and supported.

Each chair was carefully analyzed as to its weaknesses, parts identified, and the process of disassembling began. All six (6) chairs were disassembled down to the front legs, side and front rails, and seat bottoms. It was determined that all of the back assemblies for the chairs were reasonably secure and thus were left as is.

The dining table received a similar analysis, and it was disassembled too. Many of the parts which had dowel construction had to be cut off, new holes drilled, and new/heavier dowels installed. All matching dowel holes were cleaned of old, dried glue so that the new dowel construction would adhere. The table legs were given additional support blocking; the table corners too, were supplied with support blocks. All mating parts were thoroughly coated with Titebond glue and left in clamps a minimum of 24 hours. The owner of the dining set requested that nothing be done with the finish of the dining set at this time.

After several long weeks, the dining table and chairs were delivered to the owner and set up. All were happy that the family heirloom dining set was once again back in the family!
