Most of my weaving begins with the process of dyeing the yarns that will be used in each piece. To achieve subtle shades, I often will create a range of 50-100 closely related colors. These are then woven by me on a hand loom; linen yarn is used for the rug warp, to give the rug strength. All rugs are flat weaves, rather than knotted pile.
