Scagliola- Faux Marble From Euro-Plaster
CustomMade by Mead Powers
Scagliola is an Italian word meaning faux marble made from plaster. I usually use a variation of Plaster of Paris - USG #1Pottery Plaster and I just call it "Euro-Plaster" cause it sounds cool and it is a fantastic material to work with. It is the original "plastic art" from antiquity.
So the
… products shown are all Euro-plaster castings including all the wall panels in the Evergreen Building in Renton.
All of these 27"x 43" panels were crafted on a flat glass panel with 2 elbow shaped borders to form the rectangle. The panel were just slid off the glass and hung to dry. The trick was controlling the timing and color and getting an organic distressed stone effect as it began to dry then having a bigger batch ready to pour to fill the frame at the right thickness, i got it so that i could make 10 a day. The panels were simply glued to the sheet-rock walls with panel adhesive and the corners were hand-crafted with Skimstone Hybrid Cement. It was installed in 5 days in 2001 and has held up really well.
The fireplaces shown were done with this same technique. I did 44 fireplace surrounds for a condo in Bellevue in 1997 and the designer got me to make 3 tables, one for each lobby next to the elevator. The legs are made from left overs from the fireplace surrounds and the table top was cast like the Evergreen Scagliola panels with a great metal reinforcement material. I made an extra one for my wife and it is not for sale.
It is fairly easy to make a similar table at whatever dimensions you would like - for interior use only.
