When I decided to build this bookcase/cabinet, I started out with plans for a small shaker bookcase. I liked the shape, style, and proportions of the original design and then added some of my own ideas. I made the piece larger, used wood panels in the doors instead of glass, and added 2 small drawers inside the top of the cabinet. These drawers are handy for small items that just don't quite fit on a standard shelf.
The piece is made of black walnut. The selves are joined to the sides using sliding dovetails and the top is joined using sliding tapered dovetails. The back is frame and panel construction as are the doors. The panels on the doors are book matched giving them a very symmetrical grain and color pattern. I used bird's eye maple for the drawer fronts hoping that the contrasting colors would create a pleasant surprise when the doors were opened.
