This unusual hourglass was commissioned for use in a role playing game. The base plates are made with brass gears, inset with urethane resin and pewter icons depicting the four elements (earth, water, air, and fire). The plates are connected by hollow brass struts which protect the glass.
The "Steampunk" aesthetic employs the idea of modified or re-purposed objects from a bygone era, making this piece somewhat hard to assign to a particular point in history. Especially fun is the irony that despite having mechanical technology (as shown by the gears) someone chose to use something as primitive as an hourglass to quantify the passage of time.
