In the proverbial nutshell, a wood joint can represent all the procedures and goals of furniture & cabinetmaking.
Precise layout and accurate use of hand and power tools is required to successfully achieve a wood joint that is technically functional, secure and ascetically beautiful.

The scarf … joint is assembled, then slid through the mortice. At this point the scarf canít move apart in any direction. Then, when the wedges, on either side of the leg are driven in, the joint is fixed and ready to do its job of holding the table base together. Shown in the first photo.

The tenon, at the end of the table leg stretcher which has a shoulder at the base of the tenon, is placed into and through the mortice in the leg. Once the wedge is driven in, to tighten the tennon to the leg, the leg can't move. The second photo shows a wedged mortice & tenon.
