1,000 Watt Smile
The 1000 Watt SMILE is an LED installation that seeks only to transfer itself onto the faces of its viewers. We have taken this to a number of arts/music festivals & electronic music events around the US: Lightning in a Bottle, Burning Man, LA Decompression Party, LA Art Walk, Create:Fixate, Elysium, DISORIENT NYC, & more.

The SMILE consists of a plywood framed box measuring 7' 8" wide x 3' high x 5" thick, capped with a milk plexiglass front. The current stand brings the overall height to 7', however a new stand can be built to raise the smile to any desired height. Alternately, the Smile can be mounted directly to an existing structure. It was bolted to the front of the DEX bus at Burning Man.
Each tooth and lip is an individual chamber filled with multiple LED nodes that are controlled through an external laptop. There are 250 LED nodes in total which can each blink, pluse and flash in millions of colors. We have a series of functions preprogrammed into a laptop and can run video through filters to come up with a seemingly unlimited variety of light shows.
This project was a collaboration with Ted Werth, Mads Christensen & our shop LUCKY13 design+build.
We have proposed building a 10,000 watt SMILE, (20'x9') & Heart ON (5'x4'), for display at arts/music events & festivals.
