Lapis and 22k Gold Granulated Earrings: These Lapis and 22k gold granulated earrings have rich blue golden flecked lapis teardrops, crowned with handcrafted 22k granulated gold caps.
Lapis Lazuli was one of the most favorite stones of the ancient Egyptians. It was obtained from the oldest mines in the world, worked from around 4000 B.C. and still in use today. You'll see it in ancient amulets and scarabs—King Tutankhamun's sarcophagus is heavily inlaid with lapis. Because the stone is always flecked with fool's good (iron pyrite), it's been a symbol of the starry night and the heavens for cultures from Persia to pre-Columbian civilizations in South America. Lapis was also believed to be sacred to the star goddess Nuit of the heavens and to Maat, the goddess of truth and balance. The gold flecks were like stars in their night-time sky and by meditating on these colors they felt supernatural forces would transform their lives. Judges in Ancient Egypt had to wear small lapis lazuli pendants of Maat on gold chains, as a sign of the responsibility of their office.
Lapis lazuli is a mixture of hauyne, lazurite and sodalite in a matrix of calcite, with pieces of pyrite providing the golden flecks. Its name means 'sky stone', from the Latin 'lapis' meaning 'stone' and the Persian 'lazward' meaning 'blue' or 'sky'. It has been used since at least 5000BC and was very popular with many ancient cultures.
These lapis teardrops earrings are 25mm long and 10mm wide at the bottom. The handmade ear wires are 18k for strength. The 22k gold caps have a brush finish to enhance that ancient appearance and luster of high karat gold.
