The real name of this piece is Absolum's Fete, which is a reference to the caterpillar in Alice in Wonderland. For those trivia buffs, Absolum was the caterpillar's name. Fete means party or celebration.
Polymer clay is a wonderfully versatile and extremely durable material that combines the best properties of clay and plastics. It is so strong that companies have begun manufacturing furniture out of it. Its main use in craft however, remains jewelry. This necklace is completely made by hand and employs a technique originally created by Italian glass makers in the 8th century. We've adapted the technique for three dimensional polymer clay.
The polymer clay is built up layers creating a lightweight but extremely strong structure. When the design is complete the entire assembly is fired to sinter the clay. Firing changes the basic structure of the clay, much like ceramics, to form a compound that is akin to a very dense plastic.
The Absolum Fete necklace is a high quality limited edition piece of art jewelry.
