Among the Leaves is turned and hollowed to ¼" thickness then pierced and carved. The salamanders on this piece appear to be moving and shuffling through the mixture of maple and oak leaves on this wood turned hollow form. This exemplifies the chaos and order of nature itself. There are 22 salamanders of four different species each in a different position and arrangement. The salamanders and leaves were each hand carved from one piece of Norway maple that forms the vessel. The inspiration for this piece comes from a backpacking trip I was on some years ago. It was early spring and the trail was populated with the amphibians wandering about. It was quite a sight. Among the Leaves has won best of in several different art shows and has been shown in several publications. This work of art was exhibited at the Wood Turning Center in Philadelphia this past summer.
