While the old adage "form follows function" is certainly true, but nobody ever said that "form" couldn't be beautiful. The project pictured here is one of my personal favorites. This client wanted a storage trunk to fit under her shelves that would complement the shelves and the hardwood floor. Several challenges had to be overcome. The shelf supports made it impossible to slide a traditional trunk under the shelves, so recesses had to be designed into the trunk to allow it to be completely roll back under. There was also an electrical outlet under the shelves that had to be accessed on occasion, so an access was designed into the back of the trunk. Together, these two features allow for a power cord to be brought up through the trunk to be plugged into a device that can sit on the recessed portions of the top; and the trunk can then be rolled back out of the way under the shelves.
This particular piece was constructed using tongue-and-groove and mortise-and-tenon joints. The only screws in the entire piece attach the hardware. The wood used is unstained and sealed with gloss polyurethane.
