This is a steel and wood mailbox with the strong, clean lines and attention to functional form that are a signature of the European Bauhaus movement.
A hand-bent steel cover floats over a mahogany letterbox. The steel is powder-coated (Crushed Silver) to present a softly glistening sheen and to provide immunity from oxidation. The letterbox has a mahogany front and back and its body is made from marine-grade plywood, all the finest materials for a durable outdoor life. The numbers are in a Mid-Century Modern font and stand out from the steel cover; as the light slants they throw reflecting shadows onto the smooth silver skin.
The mailbox letter-collection flag is made from hand-bent steel that is painted an anodized yellow-gold as an attention-getting contrast to the silver cover. It moves in a horizontal plane
The mahogany is stained and the inside of the box has three coats of polyurethane to leave a smooth texture.
The color of the mailbox cover can be powder-coated in a selection of colors: Silver(as shown), Lollypop Blue, Sea Foam Green and Illusion Red. (I'll provide swatches on request)
DIMENSIONS: the mailbox is oversized and conforms to USPS standards. Length 24 " x Width 10 inches X Height 13 inches
Here I have placed the mailbox on a reclaimed beam from an old smithy's barn - I like the new-on-old aesthetic and the solid post balances the outsized box and lends character of its own; but it can stand on any post of your choice.
I price the mailbox either with or without numbers. It comes completely assembled but without a post or post plate. I can make these for you separately out of either reclaimed wood or steel.
The mailbox is as much a work of outdoor art as it is functional
