Handmade Bird Walking Cane In Lignum Vitae And Shedua Wood With Brass - Walking Stick

This stunning handmade cane is crafted from the most dense wood in the world, genuine Lignum Vitae with a hightly figured Shedua shaft. During use your index finger wraps comfortably underneath the "beak". Designed to imply motion and flight, the handle is poised slightly forward in relation to the shaft. Therefore, the weight bearing portion of the handle is directly over the shaft, giving the piece a very stable feel. This is a signature design of mine and is very comfortable to use. We can make it exactly as shown or choose from an infinite number of wood combinations for something truly unique.

Please allow 2-3 weeks for your custom ordered cane to be crafted. Let us know your desired cane height when ordering.

All of our canes and walking sticks are designed and handmade by Shawn Gillis, an artist and woodworker who considers each piece he creates to be his "functional art." We seek out and choose to work with top quality woods from all over the world that are all sustainably harvested. Each cane is designed with durability, comfort, and style in mind so that you can enjoy using your unique piece every day for years to come. Each handle is joined to its shaft with a sturdy metal bolt that provides strength. Our canes are all completed with a glossy finish that provides protection and a smooth feel to the wood.

Here are our instructions for determining your proper cane height:

1. Stand comfortably erect with your hands at your sides, with your shoes on.

2. Have a helper measure the distance from the floor to the bottom of your forearm/top of wrist of whichever hand you wish to hold the cane with. (You may need assistance with the measurement so as to avoid disrupting an ideal posture.)

This method will allow for an ideal amount of bend in your arm. Too much, or too little bend in your arm can cause posture issues and muscle aches.

Since I first saw photos of Shawn Gillis’s imaginative, superbly crafted canes, I was eager to work with him. I’m overjoyed with the results of having been able to do so, on a stick with his distinctive bird handle, both sculpturally elegant and ergonomic. Shawn could not have been more gratifying to work with, as to responsiveness, cane design, choice of woods, speed of construction, and shipping. At such time as I have another project, he will be absolutely the first craftsman whose help I’ll seek, and he’d be the first I’d recommend to others, unhesitatingly so.

I wish I was more detailed with my specifications. There is no brass “insert” separating the two woods that make up the handle and stem. As shown in the sample picture and described in title cane type. Also there is a clunky rubber cap pressed onto the end of the cane like my $20 rite aid surgical supply cane instead of a custom detail. Again I never made myself clear to the builder so I must take some responsibility. That said it was my first customer cane purchase I guess I didn’t know enough to ask the right questions.
