Bird Painting, Wildlife Painting: Arizona Native Bird, Scott's Oriole, Acrylic On Canvas

This 11" by 14", acrylic wildlife bird painting, is of a Scott's Oriole, a bird native to Arizona. The painting is based on a photograph by wildlife photographer Stan Tekiela (in his "Birds of Arizona Field Guide"), who has given me permission to use his bird photos as a basis for my bird paintings.

The Scott's Oriole is mostly black with some white patches on his back, and has a bright yellow chest. He is perched on a hollow tree trunk, surrounded by grass and a few wild daisies. The sky is blew and it looks to be sometime in the lazy summer.

I basecoated the bird in dark complementary colors, and then built up the bird's final colors, layer by layer, with thin strokes, which resulted in the feathery, tuft-like texture. The bark of the tree was painted with quick heavy strokes of color to mimic a rough texture.

The canvas has been sprayed with clear acrylic gloss varnish to keep the colors bright, and has been signed by the artist. This painting ships flat in a no-bend cardboard box, bubblewrapped with edge protectors, sandwiched between two luan boards. Shipping and handling costs are $25.

This is a ready made project; no customization is available. However, if you have a favorite bird that you want painted on a tree limb, tree trunk, fence post, bucket, or a similar object, let me know and I can create a custom painting for you.
