Bodhi Tree

African pottery, porcelain | 24" x 16"

My client takes trips to Africa for charity and every time brings home art to support the local community. She was heartbroken when the pottery set she chose on this trip arrived broken, but instead of looking at it as a loss, she decided to turn broken art into new art.

I used the rims of the cups as leavess, the edges of the plates as tree bark, and the plate and cup centers as the white background. I layered the leaves to create a three dimensional work which compliments the different thicknesses of the white plate background. At first she wanted to only use the African pottery in the piece, but the porcelain circles I happened to have around the studio brought the piece together too much for either of us to resist.
