Chief Red Iron, Mazasha, was among the Sioux chiefs who signed the Treaty of Traverse de Sioux. Red Iron was both a respected tribal leader and a man of peace. he did not take part in the United States-Dakota conflict, and in fact ordered his tribe not to participate in the event of 1862.
