Carved bathroom mirror - An aquatic theme for client's bathroom. Carving the octopus was an fun challenge as it wound itself around the frame,"through" the mirror. The suckers had to be carved underneath as well because they reflected in the mirror......polychrome, not airbrushed but hand painted. Ambrosia maple with its wormy holes lent itself to kinds of floating creatures in the under-water scene...the painted and reflected light from above filters through the turquoise haze. The movement of the floating giant kelp resemble and balance the curves in the opposite corner. Basswood carvings are appliqued onto the mitered frame. This is a two part installation...mirror on a 1/2" ply hung with metal cleats then the frame is snugly attached over the top. Water-based lacquer finish was applied over all surfaces to protect from moisture damage.
