My first job independently as Paul's Custom Woodworking came from a referral from a neighbor I had talked to about my new business. Mark Lewis, agent for Catawba Falls Preserve, described to me his vision of a beautiful gateway of large hand-peeled logs coped and fastened together with hidden steel plates. The vertical posts would be sawn in half and re-attached to accommodate the massive hinge mechanism which controls the movement of the gates.
This is the first time I had single handedly manipulated round log materials to transfer the curvature of one log to its mate. The results were very satisfying. The scribed log gate consists of hidden metal connections within carefully fitted joints. The mail facility has a timber framed cantilevered roof featuring eyebrow on the cedar shake roof.
