Celestial Passage (2005)

Baltimore/Washington International Airport

The space is designed to move people quickly and efficiently. The artwork's intense colors and sweeping gestures reinforce this architectural intent and energize the traveller's step.

The window is located in a long glass connector between the main terminal and the gates. After departing passengers clear security, they round a corner and step onto an escalator that takes them down to the connector. The art glass soars up to greet them and is revealed gradually on the descent. At the bottom of the escalator, the design springs back up, visually pushing travellers toward their gate.

The artwork anticipates space travel. Today BWI passengers debark for Seattle, tomorrow quite possibly for outer space. Hence the window suggests a portal to the cosmos, with large-scale simplicity and infinite detail.
