What a wonderful artist Michelle is! After meeting with us initially to better understand what we had in mind for the transom window, she prepared several artist drawings with suggested themes. Every one was a possibility that we could have been pleased with. With her talent it made it difficult to decide. We settled on one, then changed to another, and finally after incorporating elements from more than one, and with further changes and additions we finally settled on what has become a work of art in the 6' wide arched transom window above our 8' front doors. It incorporates elements of the family's heritage with a truly wonderful rondel at it's center.
The client had collected bobble animals from Mexico and wanted a custom made chess board that would accommodate the pieces and make for a whimsical and very unique chess set.
The squares are a large 2.5" square and the border uses warm, bright colors reminiscent of Mexican folk art. The inner band is composed of 3/4" glass tesserae in a bright Cancun turquoise. The middle band has an alternating pattern of 3/8" glass tesserae in a warm orange and bright orange tesserae that are 3/8" x 3/4". The outer band is composed of warm yellow 3/8" glass tesserae. At each corner there is a lime green fused glass cactus with orange, yellow, lime and black spines that I tack fused onto the glass cacti in order to keep the slightly raised texture. The board is 24" x 24" and is framed in poplar that I painted a semi-gloss black.
The overall dimensions of the Mexican bobble head chess board are 25.5" W x 25.5" L x 1.5" H.
