This is a large chess board 32 x 32 x 1 consisting of 3.5 inch squares and a 2 inch walnut border with rounded corners and ebony splines. The customer (Michael) who lives in a humid part of Texas was concerned about the chess board warping, so we sent a message to him with a solution. We first cut out a piece of 1/2 Baltic birch and then milled the 3.5 inch squares to fit the plywood. Secondly, joining 3/8 inch thick solid wood squares together using directional splines that were glued into grooves on either side of each 3.5 inch square. After allowing the glued joints to dry for 24 hours we then attached the 3.5 squares of walnut and maple to the 1/2 inch Baltic birch with the grain in one direction as per Michael's request. However we didn't stop there we then cross grained yet another piece of Baltic birch to the top layer and using a Festool dominoe machine attached the 2 inch outside border. Then adding another cross directional layer with walnut edging and finally felt to give the chess board finished look and the appearance that it was floating.
