Claro-Walnut Coffee Table With Steel Base

KH Webb designed a contemporary home for this client and it was named 'Mountain Living' magazine's "Home of the Year" in 2010. I created a very large bar and countertop from Claro Walnut slabs, a room-sized wine rack, and three tables for this home: "Elemental Suspension", "Walnut Infinity Pool", and this coffee table, which was added to the main family room a few years later.

The client enjoys the warmth of wood and the combination of contrasting materials, such as glass, metal and stone. He also wanted shelf space below for magazines, books and such.

The hard rectangular shapes are visually softened by the luscious figure of the Claro Walnut. Ample negative space gives this 300lb piece of furniture a sense of lightness.

Because of its weight, this table was made to break down into smaller pieces for transport. The lower shelf has an applied wooden border with its own structure to support the heavy 1/8" steel plate. Notches in the shelf allow the 1/2" steel vertical legs to extend to the floor and slip into mortises in the underside of the top.
